Book Reviews Suck: The Familiar and The God of the Woods
Book version of: If you like this, you might like that!
I LOVE books, but I fucking HATE book reviews. I’m not sure why. I just nod off reading them…
But, give me a bookseller recommendation and I’m yours. 📚💗
At independent bookstores, I scan staff favourites to find my kindred book-spirit (LOOK! - we both love Sandwich by Catherine Newman AND Hitchhiker's Guide To the Galaxy by Douglas Adams). Then, I hunt out their other recommendations, and buy one of their suggestions.
I am never disappointed.
Thank you booksellers 🏆
Consider this my virtual bookstore and these are my staff picks.
Hey book nerds1
I’ve been on a bit of a dark/terror/murder reading spree, one of my coping strategies for the FUCKED UP WORLD, and denying my role in it.
On with the murder books! 2
The Book Reviews Suck #13 Pick:
The Familiar
The gist from the publisher: “In a shabby house, on a shabby street, in the new capital of Madrid, Luzia Cotado uses scraps of magic to get through her days of endless toil as a scullion. But when her scheming mistress discovers the lump of a servant cowering in the kitchen is actually hiding a talent for little miracles, she demands Luzia use those gifts to improve the family's social position.”

The Book Reviews Suck #14 Pick:
The God of the Woods
The gist from the publisher: “Early morning, August 1975: a camp counselor discovers an empty bunk. Its occupant, Barbara Van Laar, has gone missing. Barbara isn’t just any thirteen-year-old: she’s the daughter of the family that owns the summer camp and employs most of the region’s residents. And this isn’t the first time a Van Laar child has disappeared. Barbara’s older brother similarly vanished fourteen years ago, never to be found.”

I’m using nerds in the best possible way. Nerdship: How we love a thing with such veracity that we annoy others, and then one magical day we find other people who feel the same way about the thing we love. That is nerdship.
All my book links go to Bookshop.org, a certified B Corp on a mission to help local, independent bookstores thrive in the age of e-commerce. I get a small percentage of every sale which I use to fund my writing, my coffee habit and my fabric stash.
